This Week in
Literary History:

In 1890, American novelist and short story writer Katherine Anne Porter (Flowering Judas, 1930) is born in Indian Creek, Tex.

Katherine Anne Porter, b. May 15, 1890, d. 1980

Porter’s stories and novellas are among the best of the twentieth century, but although widely praised, they never brought in much money. In her fifties and sixties she taught at a number of American colleges and universities, but only with her novel Ship of Fools, published when she was seventy, did she achieve financial security. It was a bestseller but far less accomplished than her earlier work, which won her many honors and awards.

Suggested Reading Novellas & short stories Flowering Judas, 1930 (enlarged 1935). Hacienda, 1934. Noon Wine, 1937. Pale Horse, Pale Rider, 1939. The Leaning Tower and Other Stories, 1944. Essays The Days Before, 1952.
